Ever feel like that?

You are good at what you do but you still want out of that not so rewarding job?

It is just not your calling?

Recently, many of my clients of been saying that they have reached a stage in their life where they feel like they are just done with the rat race and want something more rewarding. Something that is more fulfilling. Not really sure what that is, but they know that the current job they have is not IT!

Not long ago, I posted about reinventing yourself and taking a short sabbatical to revitalize and get your creative juices flowing. I am keen to know how many people actually did it and what they actually did during their sabbatical TO revitalize.

Here is where I go to recharge..... I go to the mountains or camping or near the water. Something about the sounds and the stillness of mother nature quiets the mind. But I digress...

So what help do most people do when they want out of a job? They pull out the old resume, slap on the latest job and submit like crazy online and hope that a recruiter or someone from HR department of any other company than the one they are at, calls them.

DEAD END!

Countless hours of effort and no one calls or even emails. Wanna know why? They weren't strategic about their dream job hunt. They had their cookie cutter resume and cover letter, changed the dates and titles and sent it on. Of course it was meant to fail.

Here is what I would tell you to do if you were contemplating the same. STOP! Instead, try this: Find a job you know you will enjoy, look at the job description, tailor your resume and cover letter to that job description, then apply for the job.

That is just one of the many things that are involved these days. Gone are the days when you find a job, apply or show up to apply with a resume in hand and leave with a job. Been there. Those were the good old days. It was a lot easier then.

I spoke with someone that had been in the same job for over 20 years and never needed a resume. Suddenly, he found himself have to create one for the first time. He came to me with the hope of walking out with a resume. While that is not how I do things, I gave him a few pointers and his eyes nearly popped out. He said, "WOW! You certainly have given me a lot to think about and you do a lot more that what I would have thought."

Take an even further step back. The thing is, before you make the leap into another job, think things through. Ask yourself the following questions:

What do my friends and colleagues tell me I am awesome at?

What do they come to me for (advice, etc.)?

Does that align with who I am?

Then reevaluate. Truly answer the questions: Am I the one holding myself back? Am I my own roadblock?

So get busy working on yourself first before you go into another dead end job that is not your true calling.
